Orientation

Orientation started officially yesterday, but I've learned a good chunk of the material when I arrived earlier last week and spoke with school officials/upper semester students. Most of the material is just recycled publishing material, with a few good tidbits about the island I wasnt aware of (we have the biggest centipedes in the world, and they are also poisonous, as well as the second biggest beetles. hurray!). Nonetheless, it gives me a chance to sit and read through the syllabus. Thus far, Ive noticed that the "G Drive", which contains all the documents and lecture notes a student will need, is straight out of a 90's FTP server. Fine, it has an archaic interface, but does it work?

I'm still 50/50. The files that are currently posted download fast enough (comparable to North American dl speeds) but not the T3 connection that the best universities offer. The schedule posted for 1st semester students is actually a mislabeled 2nd semester schedule. The learning objectives is still not posted, and there appears to be other redundant folders. I'm not sure if all the lectures are currently available, but I do know Mediasite (lecture streaming) wont be activated until next week.

Well, theyve fixed the schedule, and its still pretty terrifying The number of classes per day, the exams, the practicals...oh boy.

I need to really go and buy more food from the local IGA, eating out is too slow and expensive. I doubt I'll be able to last until the market on Saturday morning at 6AM.

I can feel my shoes dying day by day, I doubt they're going to last through the entire four months. I look forward to buying new shoes on my return.

  2. just the basics. few potatoes, a bit of cheese, some frozen meat and cooking oil. Turns out that importing olive oil is expensive, so I'm using the local soy bean oil...we will see how well that turns out :P Also bought some hot sauce for flavoring.
